Song Dog
The vibrant blue sky of early morning, with rays of light shooting through scattered clouds hangs above the vibrant oranges and cool purples of canyon country on the Colorado Plateau. A pad cactus sits in full bloom, the glory of springtime in the desert. In front and center sits a pensive coyote in shades of blue. Coyotes hold a complicated place in the west. They are native to landscape, having originated in the western regions of what's now the United States, some one million years ago. They are characters in indigenous folklore, both as creators and tricksters. Today, they persecuted by many humans, and feared by many more. But to me, they are friends. I've had experiences with coyotes in nature that have made me realize the depth of these amazing animals, that they walk in kindness, not just to each other, but even to a once desperately lonely human who greatly appreciated their company on many hikes. When I hear the song dogs sing, it brings joy to my heart. This piece is my homage to them.
